Anthropic Pulls the Plug on OpenClaw's Free Ride
Starting at noon Pacific on April 4, Anthropic enforced a new policy: Claude Pro and Max subscribers can no longer route their plan's usage limits through third-party harnesses, starting with OpenClaw. Users who want to keep using OpenClaw with Claude must now pay separately under a new "extra usage" billing system — at API rates that could run 50 times their previous monthly outlay. Boris Cherny, Anthropic's head of Claude Code, cited the mismatch between subscription economics and real-world usage: heavy OpenClaw users were running up the equivalent of $1,000–$5,000 per day against $200/month Max plans. Anthropic issued a one-time credit equal to users' monthly plan cost valid through April 17 and offered pre-purchased extra-usage bundles at up to 30% off. The policy will roll out to additional third-party harnesses beyond OpenClaw in the coming weeks. OpenClaw Creator: "We Tried to Talk Sense Into Anthropic"
The community backlash was immediate and loud. OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger said he and board member Dave Morin engaged Anthropic directly — and were only able to push the effective date back by a week. OpenClaw, the open-source coding agent that surged from 9,000 to over 210,000 GitHub stars in 2026, became a casualty of its own success: the tool's power users were extracting far more compute than any subscription tier was designed to absorb. The TNW report noted that the change "applies to all third-party harnesses" and that Anthropic frames the move as capacity protection for its own first-party products — primarily Claude.ai and Claude Code. What happens to OpenClaw's 210,000-star community now remains an open question. Source: TNWhttps://thenextweb.com/news/anthropic-openclaw-claude-subscription-ban-cost
